CalBank PLC’s commitment to making a difference in the communities it serves continues to yield significant positive outcomes. Two years ago, the Bank put up a 3-unit classroom block valued at over GHS100,000 and a computer laboratory for the community of Hodzo-Ve, a poor community in the Volta Region of Ghana. The Bank further donated 20 computers with their accessories and set up an ICT laboratory for School as part of the project, with the aim of equipping the children with the required ICT skills to enable them to be competitive to their global peers.
This project was initiated by Xornam Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving education in underprivileged areas. The initiative was undertaken as part of CalBank’s CSI pillars under the SDG Goal 7 which focuses on supporting affordable and reliable energy and promoting innovation through building resilient infrastructure and promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization. Prior to this investment, the school children were attending classes in unsafe thatched structures.
A recent visit to Hodzo Ve Junior High School by members of the Xornam Foundation, revealed the profound impact the investment by the Bank has made. The school building as well as its computer laboratory remains in excellent condition, providing a safe and conducive space for students to learn and grow. Since the project’s completion, enrollment has risen by a stunning 20% because of the classrooms’ ability to handle the growing student body.
Today’s key educational focus is Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics popularly known as STEM. The bank therefore remains committed to supporting underprivileged communities build the right infrastructure as part of its sustainable banking. Since this investment, the Bank has also supported other schools such as the Asokore SDA College Demonstration School, Pedu A & B Basic Schools, Obrachire D/A Basic ‘B’ Schools, etc. in the Eastern, Bono East and Central Regions of Ghana.
